Call Me Cassandra

Biologically born as a man, Raul does not identify as such and knows that he is a woman trapped in the wrong body. Furthermore, like the mythological Cassandra, the princess of Troy and priestess of Apollo, Raul can foresee the future, but finds no one in the world who will listen. He knows about her death at the age of eighteen in the war in Angola, wounded by hatred, just as he foresees how each of her family members and companions will die.

This book delves into Cuban history through the protagonist’s dramatic identity dilemmas. Its plot is written in the form of events that unfold and repeat like loops, stretching as they reveal new twists. The image of the tin soldier chosen for the cover is a recurring presence in the book and can be interpreted as the protagonist’s way of representing his vulnerability in the face of her tragic and irreversible fate. The bold colors and graphic interventions create a queer and underground atmosphere that readers can sense in their reading experience.
