Ghostly Pain

A virtuous pianist nurtures an obsession with performing Franz Liszt’s untouchable piece. He lives for rigorous instrumental practice, which leads him to deny any relationships other than the constant refinement of his technique. Consequently, he hardly interacts with the students and colleagues at the university where he teaches, nor with his wife and child — until an accident occurs, and a tragic fate is imposed.

The publisher’s briefing recommended an abstract approach for the cover. The greatly enlarged black inkblot against a white background represents an abrupt and corrosive aspect that contrasts with the precision of its chromatic combination — also a nod to the colors of piano keys. The graphical element functions as a metaphor for the conflicts of the protagonist whose obsession for virtuosity culminates in the erosion of his humanity.
