curriculum

Mateus Valadares (Belo Horizonte, 1982) is a graphic designer graduated from UEMG (2004). he also graduated in social communication at UFMG (2005) and specialized in Design and Humanity at USP (2009).

In 2006 he joined the staff of Máquina Estúdio, led by Kiko Farkas, where he worked for six years. there he became a specialist in book design and worked on projects for various institutions, such as Osesp (São Paulo Symphony Orchestra), Moreira Salles Institute and Lasar Segall Museum. He also took part in visual identity projects, such as the brand update for the Brazilian Tourism sector abroad (2010). Since opening his own studio, in 2012, he has been working for major book publishers, such as Companhia das Letras (part of the penguin random house group), and institutions, such as Sesc São Paulo [São Paulo social service of commerce]. Between 2018 and 2021, he worked as art editor for the magazine Época — a major information weekly magazine in Brazil —, collaborating to implement a new graphic and editorial project in the first instance and, in a second moment, creating the covers and directing the publication design.

He has worked on award-winning projects throughout his career. Highlights include his winning book covers featured in 50 books/50 covers (2014 and 2017), promoted by Design Observer and American Iinstitute of Graphic Arts, which elects the world’s best designed book covers every year. He has had projects selected for International Biennial of Graphic design Brno (2014 and 2018), Warsaw International Poster Biennale (2010), Trnava Poster Triennial (2009) and Bolivia International Poster Biennale Bicebé (2009). Desaudio, a book he designed, is a member of MoMA’s library in NYC. He has had projects selected and awarded in all last editions of ADG Brazilian Graphic Design Biennial (2006–2019), Latin American Design Awards (2017-2020) e Brasil Design Award (2020). He was also a finalist in two editions of Jabuti book cover Award (2008, 2010).
