[awards]
Silver medal at Latin American Design Awards 2022

This box containing three books presents Machado de Assis lesser-known work as a chronicler. The author used to be a columnist in Rio de Janeiro press, from the mid-19th century, before he was a known as famous novelist. Containing such a large range of subjects, his chronicles ironically satirizes the contradictions of brazilian society. Bourgeois, military, politicians, priests: all them could be subjects of his writings. The graphic project aims to recreate the atmosphere of the chronicle of newspapers and magazines by revisiting the graphic aspect of publications from the end of the 19th century, moving it to a more contemporary alike graphic language. Some typographies inspired by some designs of wood types that were found in these publications were gathered. There were also extracted a large volume of caricatures and advertising illustrations from publications such as O Mosquito and O Mequetrefe. The final covers look like street posters inspired in 19th Brazilian press style. A pop graphic language to reach a large audience.
