Nor Heaven nor Hell

political scientist jorge caldeira challenges common beliefs about brazilian history and proposes new perspectives to understand the country. the cover is based on a vibrant pattern built from shapes and colours found on the national flag. the addition of red details, however, seeks to suggest unpredictability by introducing a foreing element. the geometrical artwork refers to indian and african naïf craft, but also to brazilian concrete art, maybe the most representative modern art movement in the country. pointing in opposite directions, its angular symmetrical shapes refer to the book’s title.
